“The English” is a beautifully composed and uniquely told western that is worth watching. The series is sure to captivate you thanks to Hugo Blick’s unique storytelling and near-poetic dialogue, as well as the breathtaking cinematography and some stills that are works of art in their own right. Emilia Blunt and Chaske Spencer do a fantastic job of bringing genuine warmth to their roles and developing convincing chemistry with one another on screen. Especially Emilia Blunt, who gives a powerful yet subtle performance that really brings the character to life. The supporting ensemble does a good job as a whole, and Rafe Spal, in particular, is a highlight anytime he appears on the screen. While it’s not without flaws, it’s certainly worth watching. The show’s stunning cinematography and brilliant performances bring the story to life, making it a beautiful and emotionally powerful watch. “The English” will undoubtedly appeal to those with a taste for westerns and period dramas. Mad Maxine goes Back to the Future Part III to fight the racist misogynist white patriarchy with her new-found friend, Indian cavalry scout Denzel Washington, and (involuntary) hilarity ensues. On their journey they have to fight troves of serial-killer maniacs and maniacettes, like Indian Texas Chainsaw Couple, Cockney Buffy the Indian Slayer, balls-eating Hannibal Six-Shooter Lecter, and the googly-eyed Witch Ma in her house made of scalp pancakes. Seriously, though. This is bad. Like, camp bad, and in twenty years this will be watched ironically (as it should) as crazy 20s camp gold, like the worst 80s Chuck Norris is now, except Chuck Norisette in this case. It's terrible, and pathetically woke, but if you can watch it ironically, it's a boatload of fun. So four stars, recommended watch.
